From the Amalfi Coast to Lake Como, via Santorini, Bali, and AlUla: five swimming pools where water becomes architecture, transforming the landscape into an integral part of the guest experience.

The Architecture of Water

Five Pools That Showcase the New Luxury of Hospitality

Swimming pools are no longer just places to swim. Today, they are an integral part of hotel design. Infinity pools, bodies of water, and pools integrated into the natural setting blur the line between the built environment and the landscape, transforming every view into part of the guest experience. Rather than merely reflecting the horizon, these surfaces interpret it. Rather than separating spaces from their surroundings, they create a dialogue between them. We’ve selected five swimming pools that exemplify this approach in different ways: not only for their beauty, but because they represent five ways of connecting design, nature, and the local landscape.

The Pool That Disappears into the Horizon

Caruso, A Belmond Hotel – Amalfi Coast

Few places capture the essence of the Amalfi Coast quite like the Caruso pool. Perched more than 300 meters above the Mediterranean, it blurs the line between water and sky until the horizon disappears. Here, the infinity pool is not merely a scenic feature, but the meeting point between architecture and landscape.

The Pool That Reflects Light

Grace Hotel Auberge Collection – Santorini

In Santorini, it’s not just the view of the caldera that steals the show. It’s the light. The pool at the Grace Hotel Auberge Resort reflects the white of the Cycladic architecture, the blue of the Aegean Sea, and the hues of the sunset, transforming the water into a mirror that amplifies the landscape. A minimalist design where luxury stems from simplicity.

The Pool That Blends Into the Landscape

Amankila – Bali

Three pools arranged on different levels gently cascade down the hillside toward the ocean. It is one of the most iconic images of the Aman philosophy. Here, the water follows the rhythm of the landscape rather than disrupting it, creating a natural continuity between the architecture, tropical vegetation, and the sea. More than just a pool, it’s a stroll through the landscape.

The Pool Carved Out of the Rock

Banyan Tree AlUla – Saudi Arabia

In the heart of the Ashar Valley, amid the spectacular sandstone formations of AlUla, the pool seems to emerge directly from the desert. The water becomes an almost unexpected element, capable of harmonizing with one of the Middle East’s most extraordinary natural landscapes without altering its character. It is the perfect example of how contemporary luxury can be discreet, unobtrusive, and deeply rooted in its surroundings.

@Mandarin Oriental, Lake Como

The swimming pool floating on the lake

Mandarin Oriental, Lake Como

More than just a swimming pool—it’s a work of contemporary architecture. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, it seems to dissolve into Lake Como until it disappears. The effect is not that of a platform resting on the water, but of a surface that becomes part of the lake itself. It is a new interpretation of the concept of an infinity pool, where the design does not seek to impose itself on the landscape but to blend into it.

Five Landscapes, One Element

The sea, a lake, a desert, a volcanic island, and a tropical forest. Five distinct settings, united by the same design concept: using water to connect architecture and nature. In contemporary hospitality, the infinity pool is no longer just a place to swim, but one of the elements that define a hotel’s identity. When this dialogue is successful, memories of the stay begin right at the water’s edge.

Trend Watch

Today, the swimming pool is one of the most distinctive features of high-end hospitality. From a space dedicated to wellness, it has evolved into a strategic asset capable of strengthening a brand’s identity, increasing the property’s visibility, and influencing the choice of destination.

Design Perspective

Contemporary infinity pools are not conceived as mere swimming pools, but as tools for spatial design. Through perspectives, reflections, and visual continuity, they connect the building to its surroundings, making the landscape an integral part of the experience.

Hospitality Insight

Iconic infinity pools help define a hotel’s identity just as much as its architecture, spa, or restaurant. They are often the first visual memory of a stay and one of the elements that make a destination instantly recognizable.

Marketing & Communication

Swimming pools are among the most photographed and shared spaces in contemporary hospitality. An iconic design helps shape a hotel’s image even before guests arrive, becoming one of the brand’s most effective communication tools.

The Takeaway

In contemporary luxury, emotion stems from the design. When water, architecture, and landscape come together in harmony, a pool ceases to be merely an amenity and becomes the very symbol of the destination.
