For MLE, September is the color green.<\/strong> The world of tree canopies that filter the light, gardens that trace paths, and lawns that spill into interiors through floor-to-ceiling windows. Afterthe blue of July<\/a> and the sandy hues of August<\/a>, Palette MLE<\/strong><\/em> explores the relationship between vegetation and design: five ways in which nature shapes hospitality spaces<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

When Nature Becomes Architecture<\/em><\/h3>\n\n

Vegetation introduces an ever-changing element into the project: it grows, its density shifts, and it filters light as the seasons change. Its presence compels the architecture to engage with a timeframe that extends beyond the construction phase. A tree may predate the building and influence its layout; a garden, once fully mature, transforms the perceived distances between the structures. <\/p>\n\n

In this way<\/strong>, the greenery takes on depth<\/strong>. Through the overlapping foliage, the reflections on the windows, and the transition from the lawn to the undergrowth, it creates depth and modulates visibility. To understand its role, one must examine the relationship between vegetation and the built environment in both plan and section views, looking beyond the immediate impression of the image. <\/p>\n\n

In the hospitality industry, this relationship concerns the view from the room, the distance from other guests, and the way guests move through common areas. Five projects allow us to interpret this relationship through five distinct actions<\/strong>: framing<\/strong>, preserving<\/strong>, curating<\/strong>, inhabiting<\/strong>, and integrating<\/strong>. The quality of architecture is evident in the precision with which each project addresses these relationships. <\/p>\n\n

Frame \u2014 COMO Alpina Dolomites<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

To COMO Alpina Dolomites<\/a><\/strong> , the greenery of the Alpe di Siusi<\/a><\/strong> blends into the interior design through the layout of the windows and doors. Large windows, balconies, terraces, and access to the garden create a seamless transition from the intimacy of the bedroom to the vastness of the meadows. <\/p>\n\n

The palette of whites, grays, and dusty blues allows the vegetation to serve as the variable chromatic element. The sandblasted and white-lacquered solid wood, iron, and ceramic of the furnishings LANDO <\/a><\/strong> translate the design language of Paola Navone\u2013OTTO Studio<\/a><\/strong> into crafted surfaces. Greenery enters the balance of the spaces through the windows, creating a carefully calibrated counterpoint to the shades of the finishes. <\/p>\n\n

The recent renovation of the Chalet Suites, designed by Paola Navone and <\/strong>unveiled in 2025, continues this relationship: in the circular building, the curved geometry of the spaces complements the unobstructed views of the mountains.<\/p>\n\n

Preserve \u2014 FORESTIS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

At 1,800 meters, on the southern slope of the Plose, the forest introduces a vertical dimension to the landscape. The three towers of FORESTIS<\/a><\/strong> , designed by Armin Sader\u2013ASAGGIO<\/a><\/strong> , echo the rhythm of the tree trunks, concentrating the layout of the rooms vertically to minimize the footprint on the ground. <\/p>\n\n

From inside, the greenery unfolds in successive layers: the closely clustered tree canopies, the gaps between the trees, and the continuity of the distant slopes. Wood and stone maintain a material presence distinct from the vegetation, while the views establish a relationship between the scale of the living space and that of the forest. <\/p>\n\n

The theme of the forest continues in the wellness areas<\/a>, whose concept combines water, air, sun, and climate with four signature trees: mountain pine, spruce, larch, and Swiss stone pine.<\/p>\n\n

Wellness \u2014 Four Seasons Meg\u00e8ve<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

At the Four Seasons Meg\u00e8ve<\/strong><\/a> , the pool extends from indoors to outdoors, blurring the boundary between the sheltered space and the landscape. The geometry of the pool complements the contours of the slopes: two distinct levels, linked by the continuity of the water. <\/p>\n\n

The interiors of Pierre-Yves Rochon<\/a><\/strong> evoke the 1930s and the work of Henry-Jacques Le M\u00eame<\/a><\/strong> , a central figure in vacation home architecture in Meg\u00e8ve. Geometric patterns and light-colored surfaces create a recognizable order, against which the greenery outside introduces constant variations in color and light. <\/p>\n\n

The new features for summer 2026<\/strong> build on this concept. The natural wood sauna, complemented by a salt wall, offers a view of the rural landscape; the outdoor hot tub, which opened in July, extends the outdoor wellness experience. <\/p>\n\n

Accommodations \u2014 Forte Village<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

In Santa Margherita di Pula, the Forte Village<\/a><\/strong> takes the relationship between architecture and vegetation to the scale of the entire development. Fifty hectares of parkland house hotels, villas, and communal spaces: the design concept encompasses both the buildings and the spaces between them. <\/p>\n\n

The garden\u2019s continuity ties together different architectural elements and functions. Pathways, plant borders, and openings offer a key to interpreting the transition from the private realm of the living room to the shared realm of hospitality. <\/p>\n\n

It is a cultivated landscape, comprising hundreds of species. Its maintenance is an integral part of the project\u2019s lifespan: as the plants grow, the relationship between built volumes, open spaces, and privacy changes over time. <\/p>\n\n

Integrate \u2014 Hangzhou Muh Shoou Xixi Hotel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

In the Xixi wetlands in Hangzhou, the GOA study<\/a><\/strong> used the existing vegetation as a starting point for the project. The team surveyed trees with a trunk diameter of 10 centimeters or more, recording their species and root depth. Among the persimmon trees, the oldest specimen is about a century old. <\/p>\n\n

The layout of the buildings at Hangzhou Muh Shoou Xixi Hotel<\/a><\/strong> , a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World<\/a>, has been adapted to this natural landscape. The botanical topography serves as a compositional tool, guiding the placement of the buildings and the design of the open spaces. <\/p>\n\n

The windows of the guest rooms and the restaurant frame the tree canopies, the riverbanks, and the reflections on the water. The trees retain their place and their natural growth pattern; the architecture is arranged in a way that accommodates their presence. The landscape becomes part of the floor plan even before it becomes a view. <\/p>\n\n

Why Sustainability Is Changing the Way the Hospitality Industry Is Designed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

In contemporary hospitality, green is no longer just a color that evokes nature. It enters the design as a tangible material: it changes with the light, gains depth through textures, interacts with wood, stone, fabrics, and surfaces, and, above all, takes on a different character depending on the setting. <\/p>\n\n

The projects featured in this article demonstrate this. From alpine landscapes and gardens to architecture nestled amid vegetation and interiors designed using different shades of green, green can take on the hues of the forest, olive, sage, moss, or even a nearly mineral-like tone. There is no single shade, just as there is no single way to use it. <\/p>\n\n

For hotels and resorts, the challenge is therefore not to use green merely as a reference to nature<\/strong>, but to transform it<\/strong> into a tool capable of creating atmosphere and identity. When color, materials, light, and landscape are all part of the same design narrative, the boundary between interior and exterior becomes increasingly blurred. <\/p>\n\n
